It’s borderline hilarious to think that there was once a time where people were actually worried about their favorite horror franchises becoming a thing of the past.
Case in point: Today’s post brings you an interview with Freddy himself, actor Robert Englund, in an August, 1988 clipping from L.A Life. A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4: THE DREAM MASTER was poised to burn up the box office, and so it was the perfect moment to get people panicked that Freddy’s latest adventure just may be the last ‘Elm Street’ film…EVER!!
There were two reasons we knew this wasn’t the case. First, the fine folks over at Camp Crystal Lake already tried this bullshit four years earlier with FRIDAY THE 13th – THE FINAL CHAPTER (1984). Hell, I knew not to fall for that crap, and I was only ten years old at the time. The second reason was a matter of simple arithmetic: A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4: THE DREAM MASTER had a wide release the very next day after this article was published, and would go on to gross nearly $50 million during its US theatrical run. At the time, that was quite a handsome sum for a genre film. It proved the only thing that would ever truly kill Freddy Krueger was lousy box office returns.
